Ronmione was a mistake?

Recently the internet seems to be a-buzz with talk of J.K Rowling. No she isn’t releasing another Harry Potter book (boo!) but it is to do with the series.

In an interview that was conducted with Emma Watson, Rowling has apparently admitted that she is not satisfied with the pairing of Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger.

Now there will be two reactions to this.

1)   Viva Ronmione! Die hard fans of the ship that believe they were born from irritable classmates before growing into a friendship and finally a relationship. Although they may not seem to be the most well suited of couples at time they can understand that opposites attract. Their marriage was something that we all saw coming a mile off and we hope that they are still happy together to this day.

2)   She’d have been better off with Harry/Draco etc. These are the people that could never wrap their heads around why Hermione was paired with Ron in the first place. She was the brightest witch of her age and although Ron was fiercely loyal we questioned if he was going to be able to give her the stimulating and intellectual conversation that she would crave. Harry and Draco seem to be pairings that appear quite often giving Hermione a more challenging love conquest and more interesting plot line.

So the question remains, if she didn’t like it then why did she write it?

Rowling said she wrote out the ship as a way of holding onto what she had first imagined the plot being. To anyone that has written a story of some degree we can probably relate to how changing the story from the original idea can be heart breaking. And with Harry Potter being the epic series that it is Jo probably already had changed a lot of things. The majority of us will probably admit to having things we want to change once we have submitted a piece of work.

I don’t begrudge her for not changing the ship. At the end of the day, books belong to their readers. Whether you love Ronmione or hate them, Rowling didn’t dictate their whole lives. We as readers are still able to fill in the gaps to whatever extent we want. Remember that we don’t know their pasts from before the books and we do not know their futures after the epilogue.

The glory of books is that they open up a world that we can manipulate for ourselves after the words have left the page.
